If you get a rock chip in your windshield, DO NOT subject it to sudden changes in temperature before getting it repaired! A hot defroster in winter or a car wash on a hot day will cause expansion and contraction of the glass, and can result in a simple chip breaking into a crack instantaneously. Most insurance companies will waive your deductible to repair a rock chip, since it is much less expensive to repair a chip before it spreads into a crack. You can use any auto glass service provider you want, for glass repair or replacement, as long as they are pre-approved to do insurance claims. They will process the claim for you. Not all auto glass installers are the same! If you have ever seen rust around the edge of a windshield, this is because a previous installer did not use primer paint on the vehicle after cutting out the old windshield. Any time a windshield is removed; there are small scratches under the molding area beneath where the old glass used to be positioned. Pinch weld primer is used to make sure the urethane has a proper surface to bond to and prevents any bare metal scratches from turning into rust problems, which may not be evident until months or years later. The most common mistake technicians make is using the wrong urethane adhesive. When selecting a type of adhesive, your windshield technician must consider many factors, i.e. the weather and the type of vehicle. Sub-standard glass shops often sacrifice quality urethane for something less expensive and consequently less effective. We use Sika Advanced Adhesives on all installations. Using cheap glass is another mistake. Many glass shops use cheaper glass that does not fit properly inside the pinch weld. The reason it does not fit properly is due to a defect in the shape or size of the glass. This causes the adhesive to not bond correctly, and puts your family at risk in an accident.
